I feel so ridiculous posting song lyrics as post titles, but I've been so melodramatic lately, that it just seems to fit...
We've had an absolutely obscene amount of snow here in the past few weeks. It's causing roofs to collapse, the roads aren't being plowed properly, and there's talk of taking away vacation days from kids who've hit the jackpot in snow days.
I don't mind, of course, because I love winter. I love the snow, the cold, the smell of the air. I woke up on my birthday, with a fresh coating of pure white, and was in complete heaven. We haven't had this much snow since I was twelve, and it's making me a bit nostalgic when I look at the plowed snow banks that skyrocketed above my 5'2" height weeks ago. As a student at UMaine, one of my favorite things was walking to class in the freezing cold with a few feet of snow on the ground. I don't know what it is, but it just gives me a sense of complete peace and calm, and I feel at ease with myself and my surroundings. I still love being outside first thing in the morning after a snow storm; even the small act of walking to my car puts me instantly in a good mood. Call me crazy...
My camera has been staring at me for the past few weeks, increasing the amount of guilt I've been feeling for not uploading photos from its memory card, so I wanted to post these pics I took during one of the storms, when I trekked down to the Gore Estate, a historic mansion down the street from our apartment. It was a beautiful afternoon, and the snow was the type that sticks to everything. I'm still (embarassingly enough) working on figuring out the settings on my camera, so these were edited in Picnik, which I've found to be a lifesaver for fixing my amateur photos.

An Organized Library
Posted by
Ally
Kathleen from Twig & Thistle posted the greatest idea/project I've seen in a very long time: A diy library kit.
The templates are colored with brown, but I'm pretty sure that if you printed it in black & white that it would look pretty as well (I'm not a huge fan of brown -- I've always been a b&w girl, myself).
She has graciously provided pdf files with very detailed directions on how to do this project yourself. I think I'm definitely going to have to do this for my library. I've been wanting to make some bookplates for a very long time, but I like the idea of the library cards much better!
I'm going to assume that folding all those little card holders is going to be pretty tedious, but luckily my library is relatively small!

Sometimes something little...

... and insignificant makes you smile.
While perusing Design*Sponge this morning, I came across Grace's announcement that her home has been featured in the first issue of Lonny Magazine. Her home has so many fabulous little details (flip to p. 124 for her article). I especially love her orange peg board on which she displays her pots and pans, Julia Style. James has a beautiful set of copper pots that we have no room for in our teensy, out-dated kitchen. Someday, I hope to utilize this peg board idea, except I would paint it cobalt blue or sage green to go with the copper.
While flipping through the article, I stopped on p.132 and had to catch my breath a little, because I found something that sums up one of my many definitions of perfection:
I don't know why, but I'm absolutely smitten with this photograph. The hook is from Anthropologie, which I found out through the awesome links feature in the online edition of the magazine (if you mouse over some of the objects, it gives you the link to the item's place of purchase -- so convenient!). I think that I'm going to be purchasing a few in the near future, along with this (for James, of course):

And, just because I feel the need to reinforce my love for the B&W Wall Hook, here it is again:
I have a lot of different definitions of "perfection," like a hot Chai latte on a brisk, fall morning, or a perfectly picked bouquet of fresh peonies... I guess that "perfection" is a rather large statement for things that are so little. Or maybe I shouldn't call them "definitions," because they're more like examples. The only defining characteristics in my examples, are that they have to make me feel happy, and give me a total sense of calm. I've been searching for that feeling a lot lately, so hopefully I'll have more to report on that front soonish.
Until then, what are some things that give you that feeling of, "perfection?"

I have spoken of my love for Italy before. I don't really know why I have such a strong need to travel there, but it's on my list of things I "Must Do Before I Die." (hopefully sooner)
With that being said, ever since seeing the Passport to Europe episode of "The Amalfi Coast," I have known that I need to go there. Need. Seriously, Need. Glad I've cleared that up.
With great thanks to Natasha, of She Left on a Monday, I came across this tonight and almost died. (sorry... I've been watching a lot of Rachel Zoe lately.) So much beauty, it literally took my breath away. Ugh. So, go watch the video. It's amazingly simple, yet intricate at the same time. I Loves It.

Rain, rain...

... go away, please.
Alas, it's raining (semi-hurricane-ing) and I'm at work on a Saturday morning, when I could be lying in bed watching the funeral of Sen. Kennedy... I know, that sounds a little weird.
So, to brighten up my morning a bit (because the Starbucks is starting to kick in, but not quite enough, and at least there's nobody here to steal it today -- long story), here are some lovely photos for you to peruse. The photos are from Les Fifoles, and I was directed to the site by Angela.

Oh, and some pretties here, here, and here too. Have a great weekend!

Badassing up some toile.

Ally
I'm kind of amazed by the work of Richard Saja. His blog, Historically Inaccurate, is a collection of brilliantly weird creations. I was first introduced to his work by a good friend of mine, and have been completely awestruck by it ever since. He does some of the most amazingly creative (and strange) things I've ever seen anyone do to fabric. And I'm in love with it. Look at how talented he is:
My favorite pieces are from his "Frankentoile" collection, in which he cuts up pieces of toile and patches them together. I love toile to begin with. I have it in my bedroom, and would probably cover my entire apartment with it, if James wasn't so insistent upon floral prints and pink gingham (i kid, i kid). But, I do think that this would be a perfect addition to anyone's home who loves the look of toile, but also likes to delve into the weirder side of life, much like my friend K. and I do. :o)
